Employee wellbeing is absolutely essential to the smooth running of any organisation. Without it, your business could suffer from a lack of productivity, negative team morale, and a generally unhappy working atmosphere – not to mention an increase in absences.

To ensure your employees remain motivated, here are six simple ways to improve employee wellbeing:


  1. Boost team relationships

Sometimes the key to a happy team comes down to whether they actually get along.

To encourage good working relationships, implement more team building exercises, informal meetings, and lunches/evenings out to bring the group together.

Not only will this support a more fun and sociable atmosphere, it’ll also mean everyone is able to get their ideas and opinions heard. After all, there may be some members of the team that wouldn’t usually get the opportunity to properly interact beyond brief small talk in the lift.

Allowing everyone a voice will be key to improving overall morale.


  1. Dedicate more time to mindfulness

Your employees could be able to cope better with stressful situations, just by incorporating a few simple techniques into their day-to-day. To ensure they’re not overworking, consider encouraging the following mindfulness boosting exercises.


Meditating for a few minutes before work
Focusing on one task at a time
Switching off from digital devices a few times a day (lunch, at the very least)
Spending at least five minutes a day doing absolutely nothing (outside of working hours, of course)


By encouraging employees to take time out to become aware of themselves and their surroundings, it’s more likely that they’ll be able to keep any negativity in check.

This, in turn, could reduce stress, lower their blood pressure, improve their relationships with their co-workers, and even make them more productive.


  1. Make posture top priority

Every job comes with occupational hazards, but some can be easily overlooked.

For example, if your profession involves spending a lot of time sat in one place, excessive slouching could actually affect your employees’ body and mind negatively. Similarly, if the job involves a lot of standing, walking, or lifting, failing to follow the correct procedures for each task, or employees taking on more than they should, could result in long term health issues.

Because of this, it’s absolutely vital to make sure all of your employees are doing their jobs with the correct health and safety measures in mind. It could be as simple as ensuring the right sized ladder is readily available for a task, or encouraging employees to use a back support on their chair if they sit down all day.

Whatever industry you’re in, improving posture amongst all employees could decrease depression and tiredness, and generally make everyone function more productively – and more safely.


  1. Encourage healthy choices

From planning healthy lunches and staying hydrated, to encouraging stretching and exercising as regularly as possible, promoting a healthy lifestyle in the office is a key element in improving workplace wellbeing.

To ensure your employees are always at their most productive (and aren’t tempted to skip lunch), consider implementing health promoting freebies like free fruit, nutritious breakfasts, or subsidised gym memberships. Allowing them to take their breaks together could also have a positive effect on team morale.

Similarly, if your colleagues are sat staring at a screen all day, giving them the opportunity to get up and move away from their desks is a necessity when it comes to avoiding fatigue.


  1. Recognise good work

Although recognition might seem like an obvious wellbeing booster, it can often be overlooked. And, encouraging and supporting employees’ goals and aspirations (even the small ones) is vital to ensuring they stay motivated.

It could be as easy as introducing a reward system for value-adding ideas, or identifying people that go the extra mile.

It could be done by providing tailored incentives for employees to work towards, or simply recognising when people have done a good job.

However you choose to do it, just make sure you actually follow through. It will make a big difference when it comes to team morale and drive.


  1. Find problems

Sometimes negative employee wellbeing could be caused by underlying problems that might not be obvious without further digging.

If your business is experiencing a high level of absence, for example, you need to get to the root of the problem. Although it could be down to genuine reasons, it could also be because employees aren’t happy at work, they’re overworking, or aren’t being given the means to stay healthy in their job.

Whether the problems are causing lack of motivation, a poor standard of work, or a negative attitude, it’s always best to give employees the opportunity to share what may be bothering them, and offer them a solution.

From holding regular one-to-ones, to making sure all new procedures and systems are clear in ongoing meetings, it can all help to ensure employees are kept in the know, and their issues aren’t being ignored.
