Overview

Types 1 & Types 2 Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. As a result, individuals with Type 1 diabetes produce little to no insulin, a hormone crucial for regulating blood sugar levels.

People with Type 1 diabetes must rely on insulin therapy, either through injections or an insulin pump, to manage their blood sugar levels. This type of diabetes typically develops in childhood or early adulthood, but it can be diagnosed at any age.

Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes include frequent urination, extreme thirst, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and blurred vision. Although the exact cause is unknown, genetic and environmental factors, such as viral infections, are believed to contribute to its development.

Managing Type 1 diabetes requires careful monitoring of blood glucose levels, maintaining a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and consistent insulin administration. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications like diabetic ketoacidosis, nerve damage, and cardiovascular issues.

Description

Types 1 & Types 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is a chronic condition where the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough to maintain normal blood sugar levels. It’s much more common than Type 1 and is typically diagnosed in adults, although increasing numbers of children and adolescents are being diagnosed due to rising obesity rates.

In Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas still produces insulin, but the body's cells don’t respond effectively to it. Over time, the pancreas may not be able to produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels stable.

Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes are similar to Type 1 but can be more gradual, including increased thirst, frequent urination, slow-healing sores, and unexplained fatigue. Many people with Type 2 diabetes may not show symptoms in the early stages, which makes regular screening important.

Unlike Type 1, Type 2 diabetes can often be managed or even reversed with lifestyle changes, especially when caught early.
