Description
Module 1
Solving Problems and Making Decisions
Dealing with problems and making decisions are up there with the most important tasks that any manager will encounter. This comprehensive module covers a number of important units including:
- How to identify a problem, its nature, scope and impact, including the root cause
- Using and interpreting information in order to resolve a problem
- Making an informed decision
- Generate ideas/solutions, including creative thinking techniques
- Evaluate options effectively
- Finding the critical path
- Having confidence to decide and then commit to a decision
- Planning approach
- Communicating the decision clearly to avoid confusion and misunderstanding
- Implementing the plan/decision
Module 2
Understanding Leadership
Quite often used interchangeably, the terms ‘leader’ and ‘manager’ are similar and yet mean very different things. Employees look to leaders to inspire them, and this module provides essential guidance on many different aspects such as:
- Understanding what leadership is, and recognising the differences and similarities between leadership and management
- The various qualities and skills of a leader
- Action Centered Leadership - Team, Task, Individual - John Adair
- Different leadership styles
- Evaluating a range of leadership models and their significance for: Task, Performance, Culture, Relationships
- Reflecting on your own leadership styles and behaviours

Module 3
Understanding the Communication Process in the Workplace
No matter how good a manager is or how fantastic their ideas are, a failure to communicate them clearly will lead to errors or inaction in their implementation by employees. Effective communication is, therefore, a critical skill that all managers need to continuously develop. This important module covers elements including:
- Defining what is meant by the term ‘effective communication’
- Understanding why effective communication is so important in the workplace
- Recognising the many different ways in which people communicate
- Identifying possible barriers to communication and how they can be overcome
- Johari's window - communication flows
- Perception - How others will perceive and interpret the information you have provided
- Active listening
- Developing vital questioning skills
- Understanding the significance of non-verbal communication and body language
Who is this course for?
This course is aimed at managers, team leaders or supervisors who have had little or no formal management training. It is also suitable for those about to be promoted into a managerial position.
