Description

Throughout this course you will learn about the different types of learning difficulties and developmental disabilities, and how these affect the lives of children with these conditions. You will encounter the terminology used around different categories of learning difficulties and disabilities, as well as learning about the commonly held views on disabilities in the UK.

You will study guidance for working with young people who have disabilities and learning needs, gaining an understanding of the barriers faced by the young people themselves, and their families. The course will also highlight useful and appropriate techniques of integration and inclusion.

To further develop accountability when working with children with learning needs and disabilities, you will review the most up-to-date safeguarding guidance and legislation, looking at case studies to expand on your understanding of this in real life.

Finally, the course will conclude with practical guidance for working with parents and carers, and tools to employ inside a classroom setting to aid the development of children with learning needs.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to learning difficulties and disabilities – In the first unit you will review the different types of learning difficulties and developmental disabilities, you will also explore the range of terminology associated with the categories of learning difficulties and various disabilities and how this impacts the communication of needs.
  • Unit 2 – Working with children who have learning difficulties and disabilities – In this unit you will encounter some of the challenges that can be faced when working with children with learning difficulties and disabilities and an outline of some of the skills needed to overcome these challenges. You will also look at different models of disabilities and their advantages and disadvantages.
  • Unit 3 – Safeguarding children with learning difficulties and disabilities – In this unit you will learn what is meant by the term safeguarding and receive an outline on the current guidance for safeguarding in the UK. You will then explore different methods of meaningfully working with disabled children and families to create an effective plan of provision.
  • Unit 4 – Legislation – In this unit you will learn about the key legislation in relation to disability issues, you will learn about the key legislation in relation to learning difficulties and be pointed towards significant documents. Finally you will be made aware of the significant developments in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Unit 5 – How to support a child with learning difficulties or disabilities – In the final unit of this course, you will encounter advice and guidance on how to work with parents, carers and other care professionals, you will then look at different techniques of adapting to the needs of children with disabilities and learning difficulties. The unit will finish with a case study of working with a young person in an educational setting.
