In our online course you will learn that exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) can result in permanent and disabling health effects. An employer has a moral duty to ensure that workers are protected from the risks associated with HAV.

You will learn about the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HSWA) and that it is the primary occupational health and safety legislation in Great Britain.

You will explore the term hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and that it is used to describe a group of disorders that are caused by exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) which will be addressed throughout this course.

This course will look at the early signs and symptoms that employees must be made aware of if they are to be exposed to vibration in the workplace.

HAVS is irreversible, but symptoms can improve for some people if it is detected in the early stages.

You will learn that the degree of harm caused by vibration exposure will depend on the dose, which is the vibration magnitude coupled with the duration of exposure.

It should never get to the stage where employees suffer disability as a result of their work. You will learn that complying with the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 will prevent disability from HAVS and CTS.

You will look at general requirement for a suitable and sufficient risk assessment under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (Regulation 3).

At the end of our online course you will consider the legal requirements in eliminating, reducing and controlling the risk of hand-arm vibration (HAV).

Units Covered.

• Unit 1 - Introduction to hand-arm vibration - In this unit, you will be introduced to hand-arm vibration (HAV) and will consider why it is a hazard in the workplace. You will look at some examples of the equipment that can cause HAV and will learn about some of the industries that are at a higher risk of HAV-related diseases. You will look at some of the health and safety legislation that covers HAV and will look at some of the key duties placed on employers and employees. Finally, you will look at how the law is enforced and some of the penalties that can result from non-compliance.
• Unit 2 - Signs and symptoms - In this unit, you will learn about hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in further detail. You will look at the different signs and symptoms of HAVS and CTS and will consider some of the different stages of HAVS. You will consider some of the factors that can increase the risks of developing HAV-related diseases. You will also look at some statistics that highlight the importance of controlling the risks associated with exposure to vibration.
• Unit 3 - Risk assessment - In this unit, you will be introduced to the meaning of risk assessment and will look at what the law requires. You will consider what constitutes a suitable and sufficient risk assessment. You will consider why risk assessment is important. You will learn about who is responsible for risk assessments and who is competent to complete them. You will explore the five steps of risk assessment as well as looking at estimating vibration exposure. You will learn about vibration surveys, measuring vibration levels and calculating exposure.
• Unit 4 - Risk control - In this unit, you will be introduced to ways of eliminating, reducing and controlling the risk of hand-arm vibration (HAV). You will consider the options in the hierarchy of control and will look at some examples relating to HAV. You will look at the importance of monitoring control measures and some of the actions employees can take to help reduce the risks. You will learn about what health surveillance is, when it is required, what it involves and what employers should do with the results.
