Overview

The scientific method of studying crime is known as criminology. Various elements like cause, nature, consequences, responses by law enforcement and methods of prevention are included in the study. Criminology is applicable in the case of both individuals and groups. It is an interdisciplinary field and incorporates ideas and perspectives from areas like sociology, psychology and statistics.

Criminological theories have not lost their relevance even in the modern times, after more than two and a half centuries after its inception. Originally, there were three major schools in criminology: Classical, Positive and Chicago. Various modern perspectives like cultural criminology, critical criminology, postmodern criminology, feminist criminology, etc have displaced the old schools of thought.
