Description

The letters CPR stand for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The term embraces all the procedures, from basic first aid to the most advanced medical interventions that can be used to restore the breathing and circulation in someone whose heart and breathing have stopped.

Being able to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation can save a person’s life. If bystanders who witness a cardiac arrest perform CPR, sufficient blood containing oxygen will reach the brain, heart and other organs to keep the person alive for several minutes. CPR by itself will not restart the heart, but it ‘buys time’ for the emergency medical services to reach the scene.

Effective CPR more than doubles the chance of someone surviving a cardiac arrest.

There are approximately 60,000 Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrests per year in the UK. In 2013, the Emergency Medical Services attempted to resuscitate approximately 28,000 people after they suffered Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrests. Of the 28,000 people emergency services attempted to resuscitate, 8.6% survived and were discharged from hospital. Approximately 80% of Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrests occur at Home and 20% in Public Places.

The CPR Online Training course provides users with the knowledge to assist anyone who may be having cardiac failure. Additionally, a section on performing CPR on children and infants is also explained. The course defines how to assess a casualty, open an airway and check for signs of breathing. The method of performing chest compression and breathing is illustrated with an animation. Combined CPR, defibrillation and the importance of placing the casualty in the recovery position are also detailed in this course. The information provided in the CPR Online Training course is designed to accompany a practical demonstration of CPR.
