Requirements:

We would expect a performance standard at least equivalent to that of a recognised music diploma in your principal-study. You should normally be completing (or have completed) an undergraduate programme of musical study at the time of application. For the MA and MMus, to enrol you must possess a good Honours Bachelor degree (normally in music: level 6 in the UK’s National Qualification Framework), otherwise an international qualification of an equivalent standard from a university or educational institution of university rank is required. You may verify the acceptability of your qualifications with the admissions officer. If you are applying for the MMus, you must provide 2 pieces of academic written work on musical subjects. Each piece should be between 1,000 and 2,000 words in length. (If you already have a longer piece of work, for example a thesis, please choose a representative extract for 1 of these items). You must also write a concert proposal or a research project proposal. If you are applying for the Concert Project MMus, in addition to the 2 pieces of written work you should send a concert proposal in which you describe your plans and aims for a potential concert project. The proposal should address the following questions: What is the repertoire you plan to work on?; why is this repertoire interesting and important to you, and how do you propose to continue exploring your relationship with it?; what ideas do you have for how it might be presented in concert (programme design, venue, collaborators etc.)?

Assessment Methods:

Final assessment is based on: principal study (50 per cent divided as follows): final recital or composition portfolio (2/3 of principal study mark); concerto examination or faculty equivalent (1/3 of principal study mark); professional portfolio (25 per cent); project work (25 per cent).

Modules:

The MMus attracts a total of 180 credits, as follows: principal study (140 credits, divided between); individual lessons and studies (80 credits); faculty activity (60 credits); professional portfolio (40 credits); project work (40 credits).
