The AS English Language and Literature specification offers students a dynamic and multifaceted exploration of the English language and its literary expressions. Through a diverse programme of study, students delve into a rich tapestry of spoken and written texts spanning different genres, historical periods, and cultural contexts. By engaging with a variety of texts, including prose fiction, poetry, drama, and other substantial written works, students develop a nuanced understanding of how language functions as a vehicle for meaning and expression. Moreover, they explore the ways in which language, form, and context interact to shape and transform meanings in both speech and writing, gaining insight into the dynamic nature of communication and interpretation.

One of the key strengths of the AS English Language and Literature course lies in its emphasis on critical inquiry and creative engagement with texts. Students are encouraged to adopt analytical and creative approaches to the study of literature, drawing on both linguistic and literary methodologies to explore and interpret texts from multiple perspectives. Through close reading and textual analysis, they develop the skills needed to discern subtle nuances of meaning, identify linguistic features and literary devices, and evaluate the impact of context on interpretation. Furthermore, students explore the diverse ways in which individual texts are interpreted by different readers or listeners, fostering an appreciation for the complexity and diversity of literary responses.

To support students in their studies, a range of resources is provided, including textbooks, online materials, and guidance from tutors. The textbooks offer comprehensive coverage of the assessment requirements for each unit, providing clear guidance on improving reading and writing skills and offering insights into the critical study of texts. Additionally, students have access to supplementary materials on dedicated online platforms, enabling them to further enhance their understanding and skills. Through a combination of guided study and independent exploration, students are empowered to develop their analytical, evaluative, and creative abilities, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed in examinations and beyond.

Overall, the AS English Language and Literature course offers students a stimulating and enriching journey through the diverse landscape of English language and literature. By fostering a deep appreciation for the power and beauty of language, as well as the richness of literary expression, the course inspires students to become critical thinkers, skilled communicators, and lifelong learners. A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
