Overview
Due to new legislation, litigation, advocacy and funding over the past few decades, the numbers of school-age children with developmental disabilities who are residing in residential institutions has been drastically reduced. The manner in which we educate students with disabilities has progressed dramatically, so that now services that are more appropriate for students with developmental disabilities are provided in public schools. This course provides techniques and strategies for facilitating the optimal learning experience for students with developmental disabilities.

After completing this course, you should be able to:
- Define the purpose and method for creating an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for a student with developmental disabilities
- Explain how those with developmental disorders learn new skills and the process and procedures that are effective in teaching them
- Explain how to arrange a classroom visually and spatially to create an optimal learning environment for those with developmental disorders
- Explain the role of peer helpers inside and outside the classroom in assisting and teaching those with developmental disorders
- Describe how the Premack Principle helps to motivate those with developmental disorders to learn
