The 1st module of the course gives students a thorough introduction to speed reading, providing definitions and stating its significance in various aspects of life, as well as giving a brief history of the subject, with information on its advocates, researchers, and place in contemporary life. A case study of a speed-reading student is presented here, to give readers an understanding of the learning experience.
Additionally, this module details the advantages gained by learning speed reading and applications for these skills. The module rounds out by giving students an understanding of the trade-off between speed and comprehension, and how to decide which is the most important at which times.
The learning curve of the Speed Reading Diploma Course will be different for each individual. Module 2 explains the key factors influencing the learning curve of this course, but that no matter the initial starting level, with a reasonable amount of time designated and consistent effort, almost anyone can become a speed reader. Module 4 of the Speed Reading Diploma Course is all about preparing to learn. This takes students through how best to prepare their study area and mindset, along with listing the equipment needed for the course (nothing too expensive is needed, just pens, pencils, highlighters, a stopwatch, etc.).
The 5th module hones in on the ‘Preview’ speed reading technique. This teaches students how to preview texts for a quick overview of the main points. The importance of previewing texts and how to get the maximum value from this skill before reading the entire text is underlined here, and followed by two practice texts for students to use, to test their understanding of successful previewing.
Module 6 of the Speed Reading Course is about taking the techniques learned and practicing them through hands-on exercises. This takes students through timing their reading, with and without using the techniques learned, and checking gains in speed, whilst retaining comprehension. The idea here is to allows students to really get to grips with the concepts used in speed reading. Also described here is how to adapt to various texts, knowing when to slow down to gain comprehension with complex texts or speed up to get through other texts quicker.
Another technique, ‘Skimming’ is explained in module 7. This is explained beyond that of the usual use of the term, as it includes how to use annotation to make it quicker to skim text again and using repetition to make gains. The course takes this concept further, teaching how to improve comprehension further, and culminates in 3 practice passages, to work through, using the methods taught.
Module 8 of the Speed Reading Diploma Course is all about concretizing the concepts and techniques explained in the course, with a series of practices, drills, and quick-fire exercises, followed by comprehension questions.
The final module provides a summary of the course’s mains points and what has been learnt. The module, and the course, concludes with expert advice on how to continue to make improvements in speed reading.
