This sequential progression provides the blueprint for cultivating a full understanding of speed reading. Here students are asked to select their own goals for the course, so that they may measure results as the course progresses.

Module 4 of the Speed Reading Diploma Course is all about preparing to learn. This takes students through how best to prepare their study area and mindset, along with listing the equipment needed for the course (nothing too expensive is needed, just pens, pencils, highlighters, a stopwatch, etc.).

The 5th module hones in on the ‘Preview’ speed reading technique. This teaches students how to preview texts for a quick overview of the main points. The importance of previewing texts and how to get the maximum value from this skill before reading the entire text is underlined here, and followed by two practice texts for students to use, to test their understanding of successful previewing.

This takes students through timing their reading, with and without using the techniques learned, and checking gains in speed, whilst retaining comprehension. The idea here is to allows students to really get to grips with the concepts used in speed reading. Also described here is how to adapt to various texts, knowing when to slow down to gain comprehension with complex texts or speed up to get through other texts quicker.

Another technique, ‘Skimming’ is explained in module 7. This is explained beyond that of the usual use of the term, as it includes how to use annotation to make it quicker to skim text again and using repetition to make gains.
