Description
This course is in two parts. Part one includes the following units:
Introduction to nutrient metabolism
This topic will delve into the components that contribute to metabolism. You will learn what atoms, elements, and enzymes are and how hormones are involved in metabolic processes within the body. Digestion will also be covered to give you a base understanding of metabolism and set you up for the individual macronutrient units that follow.
Carbohydrate Metabolism
This unit focuses on the metabolic processes involving carbohydrates. You will learn about the breaking down and building up of carbohydrates, sometimes from different sources, to learning how blood glucose levels can be regulated, via the role of insulin in the uptake of glucose by the body’s cells.
Protein Metabolism
This unit focuses its attention on protein. Known as the building blocks of the body, amino acid structure, and function will be investigated, along with the catabolism of proteins. You will also learn about dietary considerations in relation to dietary protein intake.
Lipid metabolism
The lipid metabolism unit consists of looking at lipid structure and classification. The process involving the breakdown and synthesis of fats, along with how they are transported will also be learned.
Part two includes the following units:
Micronutrients and metabolism
The key vitamins and minerals involved in the metabolic processes will be covered in this unit. You will also cover the topic of supplements and it will be discussed as to whether they are required or not for optimal metabolic pathways to occur.
Approaches to managing blood lipids
This unit delves into the components that can contribute to increasing our blood lipid levels. Saturated fat, cholesterol, and trans fatty acids are linked to cardiovascular disease, with phytosterols, fibre, and fruit and vegetables all seen to lower blood lipid levels. By understanding what contributes to cardiovascular disease, we can make a bid to lower this risk for an individual.
Appetite regulation
Understanding why someone chooses the type of food to eat or why they eat in the first place is the basis of this unit. This unit will cover the hormones responsible for regulating the appetite, such as ghrelin and leptin, and aims to identify the environmental and lifestyle factors that contribute to the food choices made by an individual.
Approaches to fat loss
Fat loss can be a main goal for many individuals. This unit identifies some popular weight loss diets, including ketogenic and intermittent fasting. Body fat and calorie reduction will be investigated in this unit, with some key approaches identified in order to help individuals to lower their body fat.
