Overview

Good training is an important factor in the profitability of any food company, and this is particularly important in a food retail company which is the end of the food production chain. The buck stops here, as they say in America. Handling, storing and presenting for retail the food that has been delivered requires all retail staff to have pride in their jobs, to present themselves well and to interact with the customer, and although those who actually handle the food should take a food safety level 2 course, many of the staff who only handle packaged goods can take a level 1 course. This will meet the training needs as being “appropriate” to their job role (BRC Global standards issue 7), and is an excellent grounding for those who will progress to activities relating to critical control points or supervisory duties.

Who is this course for?

This course should be used at induction for those working in food retail. It can also be used for those who only handle packaged food and drink. According to the BRC, everyone who visits a food establishment, for example representative, contract cleaners or maintenance workers should have food safety awareness. This course would be suitable for that purpose.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
