Overview
Flemish is one of three official languages in Belgium, it is a dialect of Dutch originally spoken in Flanders, North Belgium, but these days is used to refer to all varieties of Dutch spoken in Belgium. Flemish is similar to Dutch, but it has distinct characteristics in the softer sound, expressions and intonation despite the similar words used.
Flemish is the only official language of the Flemish region, and is linked to famous painters including Reubens, Breugel and Van Eycks. It is spoken by around 5.5million people, and spoken by approximately 55% of the entire population of Belgium.
