Overview
The Film and Philosophy MA analyses the relationship between film and philosophy, either through philosophical treatment of film or through the power of a film to create philosophy.
This exciting, unique degree enables you to explore current and emerging discourses within film theory and philosophy, and explore different theories around visual culture, art theory, moving image media and critical theory.
As well as covering diverse topics like film as cognition, the philosophy of art history and cinema, film and feminism, the body and cinema, Freud and cinema, avant-garde film and philosophy, French philosophy and film, Derrida and adaptation, animals and the horror genre, the programme also affords you the opportunity to write a dissertation on your own topic of research.
Description
This course offers you the chance to explore film and continental philosophy, and is unique to UK teaching. In studying on the Film and Philosophy MA, you’ll also benefit from the following:
- Being taught by published authors in the specific areas of film and philosophy
- Hearing the latest ideas in continental philosophy and their connection to film
- Seeing how film can be used to teach, illustrate and create philosophy
- Gaining a good understanding of philosophical aesthetics, art theory, and art history as a context for thinking about film and philosophy together
- Being able to explore current and emerging discourses within the fields of Film Theory and Philosophy, engaging with theoretical concerns at the forefront of visual culture, art theory, moving image media and critical theory
- Being co-taught by academic staff from the departments of film studies and the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy (CRMEP).
- Access to the film studies team, who are a creative, innovative and highly respected group, with links to the British Film Institute and home to Cinema Journal, one of the most respected scholarly publications in the field
Exposure to Kingston University's CRMEP (Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy) is the leading continental philosophy centre in the UK.
