- • Understand the importance of Sentencing Council ‘guidance’ on drug driving
- • Be aware of the circumstances in which it may not be possible in law to reduce the ABH charge to a summary-only offence
- • Know how the court fees operate with effect from 1st April 2016
- • Have considered how best to deal with bad character issues at that 1st listing
- • Appreciate the importance of explaining to the client his/her position on release from custody
- • Be able to recognise those clients who are not actually covered by the Duty Solicitor Scheme
- • Feel confident when certain things are sprung upon you, as they often are at court!

Essential for anyone joining the duty rota to provide criminal legal aid, or for experienced duty solicitors who would like guidance on how to deal with some important everyday dilemmas, this bite-size session will:
Examine the position where a youth becomes 18 prior to plea
Offer guidance on who you should and should not act for as Duty Solicitor
Review the Duty Solicitor Guidance 2018 document published by the Legal Aid Agency on the 23rd July 2018
Explore the issues to be aware of when being Court-Appointed whilst on duty
Experienced lecturer Colin Beaumont will provider viewers with guidance in respect of with the advice you need to give at that first hearing regarding the completion of the PET form.
In addition, Colin will ensure that practitioners are aware of important changes concerning fines and compensation.
