Overview
Nutrition can refer to two areas; one, the food and nourishment a person intakes in order to stay healthy and two, the study or science of the effect of food and nutrients on the body of a living organism, particularly human beings. In the first sense, Nutrition is the process concerned with the intake of food and the assimilation of it as a result of which the living organism acquires energy, grows and maintains itself. Ingestion, Digestion, Absorption, Transport, Assimilation and Excretion are the stages involved in this process. In the second sense, it is the study that tries to explain how nutrition helps human beings to survive and the functions of each nutrient in a human life, the lack of which can result in various functional inefficiencies in the human body.

Description
In the earlier days, people were not aware of the existence of nutrients and hence they had no worries about the food they ate. All that mattered to them was that the food they ate had to please their palate. With the evolution of nutrition into a science, people became aware of the presence of different types of nutrients and the way in which each nutrient plays a role in growth, metabolism and repair. How the deficiency of each nutrient affects the body was also slowly realised. Hence, to prevent diseases and stay healthy, we realised that we needed to eat a balanced diet that provided us with sufficient amounts of all types of nutrients. When we went on to identify the nutrients contained in each type of food, whether fruits, vegetables or meat, our current eating habits too evolved to strike a balance between what’s tasty to the palate and what’s good for our health.
