Description

Course aims

With a virtual team, you have the usual issues of a localised team, with the additional challenges of distance and cultural differences. Our online Virtual Team Building and Management training course gives participants the knowledge to work with these challenges and succeed in a growing global workforce.

Learning outcomes

The learning outcomes of this online Virtual Team Building and Management training course are to:

  • Know the keys to establish a virtual team
  • Learn how to hold productive meetings and group sessions
  • Learn effective ways to communicate with team members
  • Use tools to build trust and confidence among employees
  • Know how to handle poor performing employees
  • Know how to manage a virtual team during any project.

What is a virtual team?

A virtual team (also known as a geographically dispersed team, distributed team, or remote team) usually refers to a group of individuals who work together from different geographic locations and rely on communication technology such as email, FAX, and video or voice conferencing services to collaborate.

A virtual team can also refer to groups or teams that work together asynchronously or across organisational levels. Powell, Piccoli and Ives (2004) define virtual teams as:

“groups of geographically, organizationally and/or time dispersed workers brought together by information and telecommunication technologies to accomplish one or more organisational tasks.”

According to Ale Ebrahim et al. (2009), virtual teams can also be defined as:

“small temporary groups of geographically, organizationally and/or time dispersed knowledge workers who coordinate their work predominantly with electronic information and communication technologies to accomplish one or more organisation tasks.”

Members of virtual teams communicate electronically and may never meet face-to-face. Virtual teams are made possible by a proliferation of fibre optic technology that has significantly increased the scope of off-site communication. Virtual teams allow companies to procure the best talent without geographical restrictions. According to Hambley, O’Neil, & Kline (2007);

“virtual teams require new ways of working across boundaries through systems, processes, technology, and people, which requires effective leadership… despite the widespread increase in virtual teamwork, there has been relatively little focus on the role of virtual team leaders.”

Why is this online Virtual Team Building and Management training course relevant?

Virtual teams can feel very lonely. Remote employees are typically focused on their silo and rarely interact informally with their peers and managers like they would in a regular office.

Meetings, in particular, can feel very transactional and dry. This is one significant disadvantage of virtual teams – you lose what’s called the ‘water cooler’ effect in a regular office, where team members bump into each other at the water cooler and talk about things unrelated to work.

Although such minor interactions can be trivial, their impact is quite significant on team performance. They have a tremendously positive effect on overall team morale and happiness.

At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
