The role of a Foster Carer

Want to help make children feel at home? You should become a Foster Carer…

Foster Carers provide temporary care and support to children and young people who are unable to live with their birth families.

They offer a safe and nurturing environment where children can thrive, offering them emotional support, guidance, and encouragement while their long-term care arrangements are determined.

Foster Carers also attend to the physical and educational needs of the children in their care, ensuring they have access to healthcare, education, and recreational activities.

Key duties and responsibilities for a Foster Carer include:

  • Providing a stable and loving home environment
  • Meeting the day-to-day needs of children
  • Offering emotional support and guidance
  • Collaborating with social workers and other professionals
  • Advocating for the best interests of the child
  • Maintaining accurate records and documentation
  • Attending training and support meetings
  • Supporting contact with the child's birth family
  • Participating in reviews and assessments
  • Providing respite care or short-term placements as needed
Firstly, you’ll need to have a deep sense of empathy and compassion to understand and respond to the often complex emotions and experiences of the children in your care, which will enable you to build trusting and supportive relationships.

Patience and resilience are also key qualities for Foster Carers, as they may face challenging behaviours, emotional difficulties, and unexpected situations while caring for children in foster care.

Key skills and attributes for a Foster Carer include:

  • Empathy and compassion
  • Patience and resilience
  • Effective communication
  • Adaptability and flexibility
  • Organisation and time management
  • Commitment to ongoing learning
"Being a Foster Carer is both challenging and incredibly fulfilling. It's a role where you witness firsthand the impact of love, stability, and support on a child's life. It's about providing a safe haven for children who need it most, navigating through difficult moments together, and celebrating the small victories along the way. It's not always easy, but knowing you've made a difference in a child's life makes it all worthwhile."
