Overview

Midwives provide professional care during pregnancy and childbirth. Even after delivery, midwives usually care for the baby during the first few weeks. Midwives also carry out a number of tasks: promote and facilitate the physiological processes of pregnancy and childbirth; identify complications; get medical assistance if needed, especially in emergencies; and collaborate with other health professionals.

The practice involves preparing the mother and the family for the pregnancy period and childbirth, informing them on the importance of breastfeeding and parenthood to promote the infant’s health and well-being, and providing emotional support for mothers through the post-par-tum time and family planning. Work settings may be in the community, hospitals, and other maternity service like birthing clinics.
