Overview

Physics is the natural science that studies matter, its fundamental constituents, its motion and behavior through space and time, and the related entities of energy and force. Physics is one of the most fundamental scientific disciplines, with its main goal being to understand how the universe behaves.

Physics is one of the oldest academic disciplines and, through its inclusion of astronomy, perhaps the oldest. Over much of the past two millennia, physics, chemistry, biology, and certain branches of mathematics were a part of natural philosophy, but during the Scientific Revolution in the 17th century, these natural sciences emerged as unique research endeavours in their own right. Physics intersects with many interdisciplinary areas of research, such as biophysics and quantum chemistry, and the boundaries of physics are not rigidly defined. New ideas in physics often explain the fundamental mechanisms studied by other sciences and suggest new avenues of research in these and other academic disciplines such as mathematics and philosophy.

Advances in physics often enable advances in new technologies. For example, advances in the understanding of electromagnetism, solid-state physics, and nuclear physics led directly to the development of new products that have dramatically transformed modern-day society, such as television, computers, domestic appliances, and nuclear weapons; advances in thermodynamics led to the development of industrialization; and advances in mechanics inspired the development of calculus.

Description

The course begins by introducing the main principles of physics. From there, we’ll learn about the metrics of bodies in motion, how to calculate vectors, the three laws of Isaac Newton, and how we define and quantify forces. We’ll gain an understanding of how acceleration and other factors work in a uniform circular motion and discover Kepler’s Laws about planets and their orbits.

The Physics foundation Diploma Course explains momentum and collisions, as you discover how energy and objects respond to different types of physical interactions, followed by a look at the various forms of energy. We’ll examine harmonic motion and equilibrium and consider the forces at work in rotational motion. Physics shares a fundamental understanding of how the world around us works, from the natural to the technological. It helps us to consider deeply and think critically, to satisfy our curious minds and explore the extraordinary explanations of that, which to others, may seem every day. This course is your gateway to understanding why things are the way they are.

Beginning with the fundamentals, the Physics foundation Diploma Course explains measurable quantities and how to mathematically and graphically understand that which we encounter every day, along with Newton’s laws of motion, linear momentum, and force. You’ll also be introduced to the concepts of work, energy, power, stress and strain.

We’ll look at the varying types, properties, and effects of wave motion, the fundamentals of electricity, including conductivity and electrical circuits, and rotational motion, with explanations on angular displacement and velocity, angle measurement, and uniform circular motion.

The Physics foundation Diploma Course is for the curious; those who are discontented in merely accepting the universe for the way it is and wish to understand why and how it is. Whether to scratch the itch of curiosity, engage in a hobby or lay the foundations for further education, this course will give you a taste of this fascinating topic and a basis to build upon with the study of physics’ higher concepts.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
