Overview

The food business operator in any type of food business has a legal obligation to ensure that staff are supervised and instructed and/or trained in food hygiene matters to a level necessary for the type of activity they are carrying out. The most effective way of complying with this legal requirement is to obtain an appropriate, accredited qualification in food safety and ensure the knowledge gained is implemented in the workplace. Our Level 2 qualifications in food safety help organisations to comply with this requirement.

Level 2 Award in Food Safety for Retail (RQF)

Regulated by Ofqual

Resources

Description

The aim of this regulated qualification is to provide individuals with knowledge of the basic food safety practices which are essential in a retail environment. The hazards and controls in this type of environment differ from those found in catering, but are no less important.

The qualification is designed principally for those who work in, or intend to work in, a retail environment where both packaged and/or open foods are available. It is also appropriate for people providing a service, for example delivery drivers and home delivery employees.

Achievement of this qualification will enable learners to identify how to make changes to practices, in order to maintain and improve the safety of food for the final consumer.

This Ofqual-approved qualification has been developed specifically for insertion into the Qualifications and Credit Framework, with full support from Skillsmart Retail, the Sector Skills Council for Retail. It is therefore fully compliant with industry and regulatory standards, as well as being recognised by environmental health practitioners, auditors and other enforcement officers.

This qualification is achieved by taking a one day classroom based course. It is assessed by a multiple-choice examination, where the candidates must answer atleast 20 out of 30 questions correctly. The examination will take a maximum of 1 hour to complete.

Open courses are inclusive of tuition, examination fees and a course handbook. Free follow up support will also be available from your tutor.

Requirements

There are no prerequisites for this qualification, however it is recommended that learners have a minimum of a level 1 or above in English and Mathematics.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
