Overview

Our Gym Instructor course has been specifically designed for those who are seeking the skills and knowledge required in order to begin a career within the fitness industry. The fitness industry is expanding rapidly despite the current economic downturn, there is a high rate of employment within the industry with currently more than 6,000 fitness centres located all across the UK. This means that there has never been a better time to take the first step towards becoming a fully qualified fitness instructor.

This course is aimed at providing the student with a solid foundation in the health and fitness industry and is designed to provide the student with the skills that are required in order to teach and instruct within a gym. The course will enable students to plan, deliver and evaluate safe and effective fitness sessions. With this qualification you will be able to work as a fully qualified gym instructor or a fitness manager within a health and fitness club.

On completion of this course you will be able to gain employment in any of the major or independent gyms in the UK and you will also qualify for entry on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 2.

Most students will complete the theory element of the course in 6 – 8 weeks (although we impose no time limits on this), you can then book onto your practical training which lasts for 3 days (please click on the “Furth Info” tab below for more information on the practical training).

This course is a full qualification listed on the QCF (Qualifications Curriculum Framework) at Level 2 (500/8756/3)

Please note: If you opt to study for this qualification by the postal method you will receive a binder of all the course notes in the post, however you will still require internet access in order to complete the assignments for this course.

Syllabus

Anatomy and physiology for exercise (H/600/9013)

  • Understand the structure and function of the circulatory system
  • Understand the structure and function of the respiratory system
  • Understand the structure and function of the skeleton
  • Understand joints in the skeleton
  • Understand the muscular system
  • Understand the life-course of the musculoskeletal system and its implications for special populations exercise
  • Understand energy systems and their relation to exercise
  • Understand the nervous system and its relation to exercise

Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity (M/600/9015)

  • Understand how to form effective working relationships with clients
  • Understand how to address barriers to exercise/physical activity that clients experience
  • Understand how to support clients to adhere to exercise/physical activity
  • Understand how to provide ongoing customer service to clients

Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment (T/600/9016)

  • Understand emergency procedures in a fitness environment

Completion of Stonebridge College's Gym Instructor: QCF Level 2 qualification will qualify you for entry on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 2.

 

Requirements

There is no experience or previous qualifications required for enrolment on this course. It is available to all students, of all academic backgrounds, however students must be 16 years or older.
