First Aid at Work UNIT 1 | PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SURVEYS

We explore First Aid in the workplace. If at all possible, workplace hazards should be noted and fixed before emergencies occur. Respond quickly but cautiously if an emergency does occur, ensuring your own personal safety at all times. Commence a primary survey by checking the danger of the situation. Then proceed to examine the airways, breathing and circulation (ABC) of the victim. If CPR is not required, proceed to a secondary survey of non-life threatening injuries.

First Aid at Work UNIT 2 | LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCIES

In this section we explain how to react to the life-threatening emergencies. These include, respiratory emergencies, cardiac emergencies and traumatic injuries from a workplace incident.

Respiratory emergencies include breathing difficulties, choking, suffocation and asthma attacks. It is important to know the indicators and treatments for each emergency. The same is the case in cardiac emergencies such as heart attacks and cases of bleeding.

First Aid at Work UNIT 3 | NON-LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCIES

In this unit we explain how to treat a patient with non-life-threatening injuries. These include fractures, sprains, burns, bleeding, poisoning and electrical injuries, diabetes, epilepsy and unconsciousness.

We also cover how and when to put patients in the recover position.

First Aid at Work UNIT 4 | CALLING THE EMERGENCY SERVICES & AFTER CARE

Here we explain best practice when calling the emergency services. It may seem obvious but its good to have the confidence that you are acting correctly.

We also cover how to report incidents and work and best practice when bringing staff back to work after a workplace injury

In this First Aid course, we look at the basics of first aid and how these can be used in a number of situations.

Why First Aid at Work training is important

Recent research shows only 5% of adults have the confidence and skill to provide first aid in emergency situations.

But a basic knowledge of First Aid can enable potentially lifesaving intervention.

In the UK over the 12 months up to March 2019 there were 147 fatalities at work; 581,000 non-fatal injuries; and 69,208 injuries reported through RIDDOR.

These statistics, published annually by the Health & Safety Executive, do not include first aid emergencies at work due to 'natural causes' for example, heart attacks or strokes because employers only need to report these illnesses if they result from trauma due to a workplace accident.

Injuries from road traffic accidents that occur at work are also not reportable in the UK through RIDDOR and therefore not included in the statistics.

So, the chance of you encountering an emergency situation at work is not small. This likelihood will also vary depending on your specific role. Preparations should reflect the risk.

Prevention is the best cure. So, if you notice anything at work which has the potential to be dangerous, or you have a suggestion to make your workplace safer, please report it to your supervisor or Health and Safety Officer.

WHAT IS FIRST AID?

First aid is the initial help given to patients suffering minor or major illness or injuries. The aims of first aid are;

  • Saving life: For the most serious emergencies like cardiac arrest it is unlikely the emergency services will arrive in time to save the patient without first aid assistant.
  • Prevent further harm: First aid can help the patients condition not deteriorate before medical services arrive. For example, clearing airways moving the patient away from harm, keeping them warm and dry, and applying pressure to wounds to stop any bleeding.
  • Promote recovery: For example applying a bandage to a wound or running a scald under cold water.

FIRST AID AT WORK FUNDAMENTALS

You cannot help a victim if you become a victim yourself so it is imperative that you evaluate the situation before attempting to administer first aid.

Your own personal safety is priority and you need to be aware of any dangerous factors which might present themselves to you or the patient such as traffic, gas, petrol or chemical spills, live electrical wires, fire or falling objects. There are also human factors, such as bystanders in the way, an uncooperative patient or an assailant who may have inflicted the injuries on the victim. If any of these factors are present, stay well back until the police are able to control the situation.

You should continue to be aware of changes to the situation or environment that could present danger to you or the patient and if there are dangers, which you cannot alleviate, then STAY CLEAR and call the emergency services. Remember to never put yourself in harm's way.

Please remember.

When you first see a victim conduct a primary survey. This begins with checking the environment is safe - You cannot help a victim if you become a victim yourself.

At the victim think ABCs. Clear the airways, check for breathing and circulation. If there is none call the emergency services and commence CPR. Communicate to any bystanders what you are doing and try to enlist their help. They could help by fetching an AED, professional assistance and directing emergency services to your location.

Sarah asked:

How can you cover all this information in 35 minutes when a usual First Aid at Work course is taught over 6 hours or more?

Answer:

Hi, we use motion graphic videos and focus the content on explaining appropriate actions to take. Learners have 12 months access to content so can refresh any points. 35minutes is working straight through. Its quite a nice course for those looking to refresh knowledge or work in low risk areas.

Saida asked:

How long is this qualification valid for? thanks

Answer:

Hi Saida, Businesses must provide 'appropriate' first aid equipment and training. I would suggest that 60min refresh via an online course like this is appropriate every year and not too much of a burden, time wise or financially. Certainly no more that every 3 years for a first aider. It all depends on your organisation there are no absolutes I can provide I'm afraid. Its is fair to say best practice in many organisations is a yearly knowledge refresh. Regards, echo3

This was helpful. Thank you for your feedback.
paul asked:

Liz asked:

After completion of the course can you be put down as a listed first aider or do we need the course that states we need the contact hours

Answer:

Hi Liz, since 1st October 2013 the HSE do not accredit specific first aid courses. It is for employers to choose what training is right for their own businesses and staff. There are no longer specific training requirements. So you could be put down as a first aider but I would only suggest this is done in a low risk workplace such as an office, cafe etc. Construction sites I think would require a longer and a practical course. Regards, echo3 team

This was helpful. Thank you for your feedback.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
