Overview

We have all been there! We turn up for an office or class presentation and the next thing we know, we wake up when someone coughs loudly enough to recall us from our slumber.

That is a syndrome generally coined “Death by PowerPoint”. This reminds one of the sayings which goes: “A bad workman blames his tools”. This is absolutely true with Microsoft PowerPoint. PowerPoint, when incorrectly used, acts as an effective sedative.

PowerPoint, if well used, however, is a brilliant tool for illustrating your presentation points with well-designed animated pages.

Description

This introductory course is designed to present amongst other points, the power of animation for creating video clips that accurately and excitingly illustrate points being made in PowerPoint; a capability of the software which is neither widely known nor used.

The course starts off with examples of myths that are generally held and then goes on to present sample videos created using the tools available in Microsoft PowerPoint. We then go through looking at do’s and don’ts of presentations, we learn more about the fundamental rules for creating aesthetically pleasing presentations and what content should be included, and how they should be presented.

With that knowledge in place, we proceed to learn how to build compelling videos to be embedded into our presentation, which do away with the need for over-worded “Death by PowerPoint” type presentations. Following that, we go through a case study that looks at the process of building a demo clip to demonstrate the process from conception to completion.

The course ends with recommendations of the next steps to take to hone the skills you have acquired during the course.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
