Description

You will learn about 24 different therapies and interventions that parents can use, with Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and ABA covered extensively, along with strategies that can be put in place to help with behavioural issues. You will also learn why children with autism behave as they do, in the hope that it will help you to see things from their perspective and experience an almost first-person viewpoint of how it is to live with autism.

An introduction to autism itself is provided to those taking the Advanced Autism Awareness Diploma as a standalone course. The course also discusses the ideas behind interventions and how to go about choosing the type of therapy that will work best for your child, before explaining several lesser-used (alternative) interventions that you may have not previously considered or may not have been aware.

As previously mentioned, the course offers a comprehensive understanding of 3 particularly effective, and popular, therapies, with a module provided on each. These are:

  • Occupational Therapy – Helps develop a person’s ability to function effectively in their environment.
  • Speech and Language Therapy – Aides those who have difficulties with speech, communication, eating, swallowing or drinking.
  • Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) - A specific form of intervention based on Behavioural Psychology that is used with children who have autism, to help them learn new skills and to interact more effectively with the world around them.

In addition to these 3 intervention types, the course also discusses Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and the use of Discrete Trial Training (DTT).

The Advanced Autism Diploma Course looks at the emotional wellbeing of children with autism and some of the holistic psychological interventions that can make a significant difference to your child’s wellbeing. These interventions include CBT, Music Therapy, Drama Therapy, Portage, Community Dentistry, and Educational Psychology.

The course also explains challenging behaviour in children with autism, including how this comes about, its effects on the child and their family, why it happens, and holistic ways in which you can help a child through the issues that lead to these behaviours. The course explains some basic behaviour strategies before covering 3 approaches TEACCH, SPELL, and SCERTS, with the aim of improving the lives of both the child and their family.

Who is this course for?

The primary audience for this course is parents of children with autism, although it will be of great benefit to you if you work with, or would like to work with, ASD children in any capacity (teacher, classroom assistant, carer, etc.)

You will learn techniques and strategies that will help you within your role as a parent, educator or carer, as well as gain a detailed insight into autism and how families cope with children on the spectrum.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
