Structure
To pass this level, you'll be examined on five units (also known as subjects), of which one includes the synoptic assessment. This tests the knowledge you have gained throughout the level, covering multiple (but not all) units. All assessments are computer-based exams (CBE).
We recommend you study the Foundation Certificate papers in the following order:
Course 1 - Bookkeeping Transactions
You’ll learn how to understand and demonstrate basic financial transactions within a bookkeeping system, across supplier, customer and business accounts.
An introduction to the double-entry bookkeeping system and the associated documents and processes. You will be learn how to check the accuracy of invoices, credit notes, remittance advices, statements of account and petty cash vouchers.
Course 2 - Bookkeeping Controls
Develop an understanding of payment methods, controls in a bookkeeping system, using the journal, and how to reconcile a bank statement with the cash book.
You’ll learn more complex bookkeeping procedures, including control accounts, journals and methods of payment and consolidate the double-entry bookkeeping skills you gained in Bookkeeping Transactions.
Course 3 - Elements of Costing
This will teach you to understand the cost recording system within an organisation, use cost recording techniques, and provide information on actual and budgeted costs and income.

Course 4 - Using Accounting Software (Unit assessment only (not tested within the synoptic assessment)
You’ll process sales and purchase transactions, bank and cash transactions, perform period end routine tasks like processing journals and reconciling bank statements, and produce reports for customers and suppliers.

Career path
