Job Title: Deputy Phlebotomy ManagerLocation: Basildon and Southend University Hospitals and community locations within the Mid and South Essex areaSalary: £31,049 - £37,796 per annumJob Type: Full Time, 6 Month Fixed Term Contract We are looking for a Deputy Phlebotomy Manager on a 6 month fixed term basis.In this role, you will:Support a safe, efficient, and patient-focused phlebotomy serviceAssist the Department Manager with day-to-day coordination and staff supervisionDrive service improvements and ensure operational continuityContribute to diagnostic pathways and enhance the patient experienceThis is a great opportunity to develop leadership skills, strengthen service resilience, and make a significant impact on organisational performance.The Deputy Phlebotomy Manager supports the delivery of a safe, efficient, and patient-focused phlebotomy service, working closely with the Department Manager to ensure high standards of care and operational performance.This role plays a key part in the day-to-day coordination of services, staff supervision, and continuous service improvement.By supporting leadership, driving improvements, and ensuring service continuity, the postholder plays a crucial role in helping the organisation meet demand, support diagnostic pathways, and deliver a positive patient journey. This role strengthens the resilience and efficiency of the service, making it a key contributor to overall organisational performance.Responsibilities:The post holder will be responsible for but not limited to:Supporting the Phlebotomy Manager in overseeing daily operations and service deliverySupervise and coordinate the phlebotomy teamOversee daily staffing and department rota management ensuring appropriate staffing and skill mixAct as the lead in the absence of the Phlebotomy ManagerEnsure adherence to clinical governance, infection prevention, and health & safety standardsMonitor service performance and patient experienceAssist in implementing policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiativesSupport recruitment and ongoing development of staffAbout you:Essential Skills and ExperienceLevel 6 Qualification or equivalent experience gained in a Supervisory roleComputer literate with a good working knowledge of office applicationsSubstantial experience in a healthcare settingProven experience of people managementAbility to prioritise the demands of a changing workloadDemonstrate good verbal and written communication skillsHighly visible, compassionate leader with strong values that align with those of SynlabAbility to work accurately under pressure, manage time and prioritise workloadAbility to work on own initiative as well as under the direction of the Phlebotomy ManagerAbility to apply knowledge to workload and demonstrate analytical skillsExperience of KPI monitoring and performance related workflow skills and toolsFull UK driving licence and access to a motor vehicle for business useA positive role model who inspires, motivates and empowers othersDesirable:Management/Leadership qualification or equivalent experienceCertified Phlebotomist trainingEffective time management skillsBasic CPR and First Aid CertificationUnderstand medical terminology, medical and scientific awarenessNHS work experienceExperience of working within a multi-disciplinary teamHR recruitment and staff selection skillsPerforming Appraisals and ProbationsAbility to progress change managementProject management experienceWorking knowledge of QPulse or similar Quality Management systemSYNLAB UK & Ireland work closely with clinicians, hospitals, occupational health providers, and clinical researchers to deliver comprehensive pathology services.We thrive in diverse environments, which is reflected in our workforce, clients, customers, suppliers, communities, and partners.
