Highways England are responsible for operating, maintaining and improving England's motorways and major A roads. Over recent years, investment in our highways has increased, this has led to advances in technology, such as smart motorways; enabling traffic to flow better. However, even more is yet to be done. Considering that a third of all traffic, two thirds of heavy goods vehicles, and 98% of UK businesses rely on them, and you can see why our roads, and what we do, matters so much.

The Role

We are looking to appoint a talented communications and stakeholder engagement lead for the country's biggest roads project, the new Lower Thames Crossing on a permanent basis. This is an ambitious and complex scheme which will deliver billions of pounds of economic benefit to the country and improve journeys for millions of motorists by building a tunnel under the Thames connecting Kent to Thurrock and Essex, with new roads linking to the existing strategic road network.

If you have experience in major infrastructure sector, a track record of managing communications in a complex and sensitive stakeholder environment, you may be just what we need to lead Highways England's communications team on this exciting project.

You will be part of Highways England's Corporate Communications Directorate but will be required to work from the project's London base as well as travel to meetings in the South East and other offices.

Day to Day

  • Work as part of the project leadership team to provide ongoing communications and engagement support

  • Working with a large supply chain team, oversee the delivery of 'best practice' communications plans , including commissioning, writing, editing/ proof reading, coordinating publications, briefings and statements.

  • Ensure delivery of a standardised, consistent, effective and efficient communications in line with Highways England's brand and tone of voice

  • Oversee the implementation of a complex stakeholder engagement strategy

  • Ensure communications products and services are planned, developed, implemented, managed, and evaluated effectively, efficiently and consistently.

  • Work collaboratively across organisational boundaries to identify business needs, priorities and potential challenges that impact on or are impacted by company communications and take action to mitigate risks and pursue opportunities.

  • Actively seek and act on customer feedback to ensure continuous improvement of communication service delivery

About you

  • Proven experience as a communications professional with a good understanding of the wider communication context.

  • Proven track record of working in a complex environment and leading a team

  • Demonstrable experience of managing communications in a delivery environment

  • Ability to understand the context and implications of technical plans and scheme delivery activities to a sufficient level to enable effective decisions to be taken

  • Experience in public consultation and managing feedback.

  • Evidence of effective stakeholder relationship management, influencing & negotiation skills, and be able to demonstrate effective people management skills
