The British Geological Survey (BGS) is one of the world's leading and forward thinking environmental science institutes with a focus on both public good science for government and geoscientific research with industry and academia to understand earth and environmental processes. From April 2018, BGS, a component part of the Natural Environment Research Council, will be part of UK Research and Innovation, bringing together seven Research Councils, Innovate UK and a new organisation, Research England, with a vision to be the best research and innovation organisation in the world.

The BGS and NERC are currently delivering a £31m investment in the UK Geoenergy Observatories project to establish new centres for world-leading research into the subsurface environment. The knowledge generated will contribute to the responsible development of new energy technologies both in the UK and internationally.

The BGS has identified two preferred locations for the research centres and is delivering an ambitious local, regional and national public and stakeholder engagement programme.

The UK Geoenergy Observatories project delivery team is now seeking a communications and engagement officer to work with the UK Geoenergy Observatories communication manager to implement the strategic communications plan.

You will lead on the delivery of the communications tasks identified and in the creation of new ideas for engagement as the programme develops. You willbe part of a dynamic project team, a fast-paced environment and involved in delivering one of the organisation’s strategic aims.

To apply for this post you will possess a first degree and will also have NCTJ preliminary qualifications (or industry equivalent). It is essential that you also have evidence of delivering communication outputs aligned to strategic communications objectives and the use of traditional, digital, social and multi-media channels to promote and implement engagement activities. In addition, you should have the ability to prioritise work and meet tight deadlines, adapt to changing priorities and be able to work within a variety of teams.

Depending on qualifications and experience, starting salary for the role will be £28,200 per annum to £30,600 per annum. Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks. A generous benefits package is also offered, including a company pension scheme, childcare voucher scheme, 30 days annual leave plus 10.5 days public and privilege holidays. The role is fixed term until 31 March 2020.
