Aspen Healthcare was established in 1998 and is a UK-based private healthcare provider with extensive knowledge of the healthcare market. The Group’s core business is the management and operation of private hospitals and other medical facilities, such as day surgery clinics, many of which are in joint partnership with our Consultants. Aspen is the proud operator of four acute hospitals, two specialist cancer centres, and three day-surgery hospitals in the UK.

Due to the retirement of the current post holder we are seeking a Group Head of Health & Safety and Risk Management to be responsible for ensuring that there is a strong health and safety culture across the company and that risks are being appropriately managed. You will need to demonstrate clear evidence of continuous improvement within a busy healthcare environment.Strong candidates will bring a track record of successful management of health and safety in an organisation of significant complexity and scale and combine excellent technical ability with leadership and genuine people skills.

The Group Head of Health & Safety (H&S) and Risk Management (RM) will be the focal point and expert advisory resource on H&S and RM and lead on assuring a strong health & safety 'active risk’ culture across the company. Their primary responsibility will be to implement a strategic health and safety system to support the organisation to achieve its objective of outstanding standards and values and advise Senior Directors and Executives on the adequacy and effectiveness of their H&S compliance systems and of their statutory duties. The successful applicant will lead on all health & safety related initiatives, training programs, the accident and incident management processes, and compliance and audit across all our Group provider locations.

The role includes being the lead professional in H&S and risk management and the provision of advice and training to staff and management at all levels across the Group on the adequacy of H&S systems, procedures and documentation. H&S systems will include providing support to staff such as policies, procedures, training and practice in major incident and business continuity planning ensuring that the business acts in a safe and effective professional way.

Additionally the post holder will lead on supporting Facility and Functional Directors in the identification, assessment, recording and management of risk, supporting appropriate management controls and mitigation of risk in support of the Board Assurance Framework; and provide reports on progress to management. It is essential that you are a capable leader, able to empower, facilitate and support our staff. You need to be able to articulate your understanding of health and safety compliance at a high level and have a strong appreciation for its importance in our business.

Far from 'driving a desk’ you will be hands on in leading on health and safety and risk management and reflect our corporate values, including 'Beyond Compliance’. You will take a practical approach toward health and safety which is fit for purpose and most importantly, effective. You will need to be able to travel to our facilities, building an understanding of our business and bringing a valuable supportive presence to our local operational teams. The role will see you attending local health and safety and leadership meetings and involve reporting on risk & assurance performance regularly.

With appropriate qualifications and membership of IOSH, the potholder must be able to demonstrate up-to-date knowledge of the rapidly evolving occupational safety and health legislation, as well as legislation in key related areas. They will also need to be able to provide proactive, positive and visible leadership to a team and develop constructive relationships across the Group to successfully ensure its health, safety and welfare.

Healthcare encompasses a wide range of H&S elements and you need to have good working knowledge of physical, biological, chemical, ergonomic and organisational hazards. You need to have considerable experience in accident and incident investigation, writing policies, undertaking inspections, carrying out audits and must be resourceful and facilitative in providing effective solutions in the pursuance of risk elimination and reduction. The role also requires excellent communication and written skills to provide effective presentations and reports.

IEMA Environmental Management qualifications and/or experience of security management would be also helpful but are not essential but a strong commercial awareness is a must.
