Overview

Upcycling is the process of reusing and refashioning old or discarded objects or materials and turning them into something useful and often beautiful.

Achievement

Description

The aims of this Diploma course are to allow learners to develop their skills and knowledge in upcycling, including:

  • The financial benefits of upcycling
  • Ideas and items to upcycle
  • Upcycling clothes
  • Upcycling furniture
  • Step by step projects

The course is designed to give the learner an understanding of upcycling and what can be achieved by it. It gives details on why we should be upcycling rather than buying new all of the time and the benefits of taking time to change and alter old worn items into something wonderful and individual. The course gives instructions on the materials that are needed to complete a project, from furniture to using old worn t-shirts and making rugs.

Upcycling is making use of items which no longer have a purpose to us. The old chest of drawers in the spare bedroom for instance which was very trendy 20 years ago, but is now tired and worn can have new life put back into it. Many people have upcycled items for years without even realising it. This is more apparent in larger families who have passed items of clothing down from one person to another. A denim jacket, for instance, may have been worn for a couple of years, then it was passed down or along the family. The new owner may have put badges or patches onto it to make it more individual. This is upcycling.

Couples who have just moved into their new home cannot always afford brand new furniture and are grateful for the sofa that was given to them by a friend. It may not have been the colour that they wanted, so they buy some throws and cover the sofa with them. Instantly, they have a new sofa in the colour or design which suits their surroundings. The sofa has been given a new purpose, it has been updated and made more desirable. This results in the couple saving money and the friend who gave it to them has not had to take the sofa to the landfill.

Within the programme there are a mixture of module types requiring a range of responses, including descriptive answers and the completion of knowledge based activities.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
