Overview

While nobody can categorically determine WHY serial killers do what they do, enough have been captured, analysed and interviewed over the years for academics, criminologists and psychologists to make a reasoned guess as to what their motivation was.

Description

It will always be a guess. But as with anything, if you can take a large enough sample, patterns begin to emerge. So it is with serial killers.

This incredibly insightful course will take you through several aspects of what makes up the mind and personality of a person who repeatedly kills. You will explore who murderers actually are; the truth often both surprises and frightens us. You’ll learn about what happens to them in the years before they set off on their inhuman journeys.

You’ll be presented with various theories and actual testimony relating to the process the killer engages when selecting and executing (poor choice of words) the “kill”.

The course also explores the concept of female serial killers; something that has until relatively recently almost been ignored. Then there are “buddies” who team up to carry out murders in a coordinated way, and finally an exploration of a sinister “new trend” – the emergence of so-called “health care” killers.

Finally the course helps you explore the possibility that perhaps serial killers can be “fixed”. You decide. Make your own mind up.

Who is this course for?

We've all done it. I don't mean we've all become serial killers; what I mean is that we’ve all wondered what goes on in the mind of someone – who invariably appears to others as completely normal and nonthreatening – who decides to kill another human being. And then repeats the process again and again. This fascinating course may give you some peace. It may not. In any event, once you've completed it, you may have gained a tiny insight into a very complex and disturbing area of human psychology.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
