UKATA Asbestos Awareness Category A Training
Virtual College
Summary
- Exam(s) / assessment(s) not included in price, and must be purchased separately
Overview
In the UK, more than half a million non-domestic premises and houses are still thought to contain some form of asbestos.
Figures from the Health and Safety Executive show that around a quarter of the 4,000 or so people dying from asbestos-related diseases each year in Britain are tradespeople, such as joiners, electricians and plumbers. This is why Asbestos training is a legal requirement; so you can avoid the risks.
This module is classed as Category A training and is aimed at making learners aware of the dangers associated with unknowingly coming into contact with asbestos. It does not train them to work with asbestos containing materials (ACMs).
This module has been developed in conjunction with Life Environmental.
By the end of this module you should be able to:
- Describe the properties of asbestos in terms of the risks to and effects on health caused by exposure to asbestos and the increased risk to those who smoke;
- Outline the types of asbestos and explain where asbestos and Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) can be typically found within buildings and in plants;
- Describe the main reasons for the use of asbestos insulation, asbestos insulating boards, asbestos cement and other ACMs;
- Describe the risks of fibre release from ACMs;
- Demonstrate an awareness of how you would find information about the presence of asbestos before starting work;
- Know the procedures to follow if any unintentional contact is made with ACMs and have knowledge of appropriate emergency procedures; and
- Outline the legislation relating to asbestos, particularly with reference to regulations 4 and 5 of The Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR).
