Abuse and neglect can cause long-lasting damage with consequences for society in general. Living a life that is free from harm and abuse is a fundamental right of every person, and looking out for the welfare of those most vulnerable in our society is everyone’s responsibility.

This Safeguarding Online Course defines what Safeguarding means, how users can contribute to the safeguarding process and what to do if users are concerned about the safety or welfare of a child or vulnerable adult.

Information from the UK Government, defines Safeguarding as a term which is broader than ‘child protection’ and relates to the action taken to promote the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and protect them from harm.

A vulnerable adult is someone who is aged 18 or over who has a physical, sensory or learning disability. A vulnerable adult can have mental health problems or substance misuse difficulties and can be ill or frail. Also, there may be a evidence of dementia/diminished capacity.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Having safeguards in place within an organisation protects and promotes the welfare of children and vulnerable adults. It also enhances the confidence of trustees, staff, volunteers, parents/carers and the general public.

Children and vulnerable adults are less able to protect themselves than others, making them vulnerable to abuse. Research indicates that abuse and neglect are both under-reported and under-recorded. Inquiries into circumstances where abuse and neglect occurred have identified failings in how children and vulnerable adults are protected from harm.

To address these failings, people who come into contact with children and vulnerable adults as part of their paid employment or voluntary work, must have appropriate training in safeguarding procedures.

This Safeguarding Online Course, provides information on the safeguarding process. It explains the problems children and vulnerable adults face. Additionally, it details what to do if there is a concern over an individual’s welfare.

An explanation of the different categories of abuse (physical, sexual, emotional and neglect) is given. Also details on how to recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse is provided. Alongside this, where abuse can occur and who carries out the abuse is discussed.

Users will learn practical things they can do to safeguard children and vulnerable adults. Furthermore, if a member of staff suspects abuse or the risk of abuse, procedural advice is explained. The importance of the 4 Rs which underpins the safeguarding procedure, is also discussed; recognise, respond, record and report.

All employees in an organisation have a responsibility under the Safeguarding process but this course is particularly appropriate for individuals who come into contact with children and vulnerable adults as part of their paid employment or voluntary work

Course Objectives:

• To explain what safeguarding is and the role users play.
• To identify the different types of abuse and how to recognise the signs and symptoms.
• To detail what users should do if they have concerns for the safety of a child or vulnerable adult.

This online training is RoSPA Approved. Once the 70 minute course is completed, users must take a final test consisting of 10 questions. The final test has a minimum pass rate requirement of 70%. On successful completion of the test users can download and print off a completion certificate.
