Description
This programme offers the opportunity to fully explore the research experience and interact with others at this level of academic work; the PhD is an academic degree and does not lead to professional registration in psychotherapy or counselling, or to chartered counselling psychology status; students are normally admitted to the degree of MPhil in the 1st instance and, during the 1st year, work on producing an identifiable, independent piece of work for submission to transfer to PhD; this work usually forms part of the on-going research as well as being used to determine suitability to transfer; candidates wishing to transfer must also have completed the requirements relating to research methodology; if transfer is approved, the registration of the PhD is backdated to the original date of registration with the programme.

Requirements:
Either the RUL's MA in psychotherapy and counselling, or an equivalent level of professional training in psychotherapy, counselling or counselling psychology; it is desirable to also be registered as a psychotherapist or counsellor with the UKCP or BACP, or as a BPS chartered psychologist, or international equivalent; applicants are required to have sufficient background knowledge and experience in research methodology and to present a detailed research proposal; applicants will be expected to attend an interview before an unconditional offer can be made; fluency in English is also required.
