Description
What will you learn in this Proofreading & Copy Editing Course
Module 1
In this module you will learn all about What does a Proofreader do? Proofreaders will check documents for simple and complex errors. Spelling mistakes and grammar errors cannot be in an article when it goes out for publication. Errors can impact the integrity of a publication. Proofreaders are the members of the publishing team that make sure that documents look and read their best before they are sent to print.
Module 2
This module will teach you about Difference between Copyediting. Copyediting is the process of checking for mistakes, inconsistencies, and repetition. During this process, your manuscript is polished for publication. Contrary to popular belief, the copyeditor is not a glorified spell checker.
Module 3
In this module you will learn all about Proofreading. Proofreading is the process of examining the final draft of a document or text — after it has been edited — to ensure there are absolutely no errors. A proofreader will review for spelling errors, punctuation errors, typos or incorrect use of regional English (i.e. ensuring that you’re using American English or British English when necessary).
Module 4
This module will teach you about Proofreading Symbols. The use of almost all proofreading symbols follows the same pattern. There is a mark in the margin, along with specific details about the change that should be made, and a mark in the text showing where those instructions should be implemented.
Module 5
In this module, you will learn all about Proofreading on Paper & Screen. Proofreading means examining your text carefully to find and correct typographical errors and mistakes in grammar, style, and spelling.
Module 6
This module will teach you about Strategies to Check for Specific Errors. Once you know your common mistakes, you can check your papers for them specifically. Here are some strategies to help you out—only use the ones that you need. The key to success is concentrating.
Module 7
In this module, you will learn all about Editing & Proofreading Strategies. People think that editing and proofreading are two names for the same thing. Editing has a different function to proofreading and occurs at a different stage in the writing process. Writing is a process, and you should aim to produce several drafts. You will edit the second-to-last version.
Module 8
This module will teach you about Proofreading an Essay. Proofreading is the final step of the writing process completed only after the larger concerns of focus, development, organization, and coherence have been satisfied. We proofread to find grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors, omitted or extra words, and typos. However, proofreading is not the same as reading!
Module 9
In this module you will learn all about Copy Editing. Copy-editing takes the raw material (the ‘copy’: anything from a novel to a web page) and makes it ready for publication as a book, article, website, broadcast, menu, flyer, game or even a tee-shirt.
Module 10
This module will teach you about Basic Copy Editing. Scan the article for errors or ways it can be improved. The entire article, or particular sections, may be tagged as needing a copyedit. There is a list of common mistakes below.
Module 11
In this module you will learn all about Simple Rules for Copyediting. Whether your writing is a fictional novel or an academic paper, it is important that you are consistent throughout the document with regard to spelling, capitalization, and the terminology that you use. The easiest way to do this is to make what editors call a ‘style sheet’.
Module 12
This module will teach you about Fact Checking As Copy Editor. Ideally, fact-checking should occur before the copyediting stage. If an error is discovered, the author may need to do some rewriting that should be checked by the structural editor. Some processes use specialized fact checkers (those at larger magazines, for example).
