Overview

A career in journalism is one of the most rewarding in the world, requiring passion, determination and skill to succeed.

The NCTJ qualification has launched the careers of world class reporters and is nationally recognised as the kite mark of quality by employers. UCFB is the only short course in the UK to offer the NCTJ’s Broadcasting module in radio and television – skills which media companies are increasingly requiring in a multi-platform age. Students will have access to a bespoke mobile radio studio and one of Wembley Stadium's two TV studios overlooking the pitch.

Alternatively, candidates can choose options in Sports Journalism or Production Journalism. All students will be trained in the core skills of reporting for a range of digital, print, video and broadcast platforms by experienced senior journalists who are also NCTJ lecturers.

NCTJ students are expected to secure short term work placements with the support of tutors and will also have the opportunity to contribute to the sports website SportsVibe. There will be visits to the Greater London Authority, magistrates and crown courts, Sky News plus a variety of guest speakers who work in newsrooms or have daily contact with journalists.

Description

Students must pass seven modules graded A-C, including attaining 100wpm shorthand to attain the NCTJ Gold Standard certificate. All students will take the following modules:

  • Shorthand
  • Essential Media Law and Regulation
  • Court Reporting
  • Essential Public Affairs
  • Reporting
  • E-portfolio

Candidates will choose one other option from the following electives:

  • Sports Journalism
  • Production Journalism
  • Broadcast Journalism (double module)

Requirements

Applicants will have a degree (in any discipline), although consideration will be given to those with experience/employer sponsorship. GCSE English at grade C or above is essential. Students with outstanding A-level results will also be considered.

Applicants must also pass the NCTJ pre-test with a minimum score of 65%. This will be followed up by an interview with UCFB lecturers.
