Overview

This MSP® course consists of five days of training to help you prepare for and pass the MSP® Foundation and Practitioner exams.

MSP Foundation and Practitioner is a globally-recognised Programme Management qualification which indicates knowledge of best practice in programme management and the ability to apply this knowledge to the workplace. The course includes both exams and has been accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT

This course is split into two parts:

  1. MSP Foundation Course
  2. MSP Practitioner Course

This combined course will teach delegates how to successfully deliver change through the application of programme management. MSP framework is becoming increasingly recognised as a key factor which enables organisations to manage transformation, as experience has shown that organisations are likely to fail to deliver change successfully where the leadership is too weak, or there are unrealistic expectations of the organisational capacity and capability. Adopting programme management approach with MSP helps eliminate such risks and interdependencies to manage, and conflicting priorities to resolve.

The organisers of the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympic Games used MSP® to help them manage such a large and complex event.

The Games were a gigantic undertaking for London, and it was important to get them right. Getting the event to go off without a hitch required a vast amount of organisation; venues had to be built on time, transport had to be co-ordinated to work around the Games, and all the different departments and agencies involved, from the Home Office to the Metropolitan Police, had to deliver their services efficiently and effectively.

At the basic level, each project within the Olympic Games could be managed using a Project Management methodology such as PRINCE2. However, at the programme level, where groups of projects were collected together, a different kind of high-level methodology was needed. The principles of MSP were used in order to give structure to the programme, ensuring plans were pulled together and that risks were managed effectively.

The organisers of the Games also understood the importance of stakeholder engagement, a vital part of the MSP® framework. Stakeholders were kept in the loop throughout the project, not just through written reports, but through face to face communication. Furthermore, by looking at the successes and failures with previous Olympic Games, the London 2012 organisers were able to identify potential problems and take the steps to solve them in plenty of time.

Overall, the 2012 Olympic Games were a great success thanks to the programme management provided by MSP®. Every venue was constructed on time and the event stayed within budget.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
