What is moving and handling?


The Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR, 1992) define manual handling as 'any transporting or supporting of a load (including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof) by hand or by bodily force'. Moving and handling injuries may be life changing, or may sometimes result in substantial loss of income, litigation, potential and actual harm to yourself and others.

MHC Training Solutions provide open moving and handling of people training courses every Tuesday afternoon at our fully equipped training centre in Coventry, West Midlands.

Manual handling training courses can also be delivered in-house at your workplace or any suitable venue in the UK.

Course venue: Any suitable UK venue or workplace

Target audience: Locum & Agency Workers; Nurses; Healthcare Assistants; Support Workers; Care Staff.

Moving and Handling training fee: £425 + VAT (Combine up to 3 courses for a full day's training at just £595 + VAT) - This is course dependent.

Maximum delegates: 20 delegates per session (any health & social care workers)

Course duration: 3 - 4 hours (AM/PM)

Certification: Certificate of attendance electronically issued per each delegate (valid for 1 year) next working day

Course format: Trainer will cover key legislation, regulations and recommended practice. The course will also include demonstrations, simulations, role play and assessments in line with CQC key lines of enquiry (KLOEs), Skills for Health UK Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF), Skills for Care, Resuscitation Council (UK), Health and Safety Executive and the National Back Exchange

Dress code: Wear casual/comfortable clothing as practical assessment is required.

Schedule of training: Annual refresher as per regulatory guidelines

Ofqual regulated qualification: If you require certification regulated by Ofqual, we can provide this for an additional £15 per person.

Do you want us to book a training venue: We can support you with sourcing a suitable UK training venue for the training to take place. We will quote on request.

Equipment provided: Our trainer will provide all necessary training equipment, including; hoist slings, transfer boards and handling belts. If you require large/heavy equipment, such as; standing hoists or rota stands, this will incur an additional fee of £295.

Important information:

  • The training venue should be quiet and uninterrupted throughout.
  • Staff should not be expected to be on duty and must attend the full session to be certified.
  • We offer flexible dates, call to book a day that suits you and your business.

What does this moving & handling training course involve?

On completion of the moving & handling course, each learner will:

  • Understand various legislation related to manual handling (in accordance with The Health & Safety Executive (HSE))
  • Learn the recommended manual handling techniques and how to carry out risk assessments
  • Safely move and handle loads, including safe moving and handling of people
  • Understand the anatomy/physiology of the spine/musculoskeletal system
  • Awareness of the causes of back pain and techniques to minimise back injuries
  • Demonstration of safe techniques for moving and handling
  • Safety and confidence when using moving and handling aids such as hoists, slings, stand aids and slide sheets among others
  • Understand employers and employees’ responsibilities under relevant national Health & Safety legislation including most recent versions of the Manual Handling Operation Regulations (MHOR)
  • Know where additional advice and information can be sought relating to Moving and Handling issues
  • Be able to use some ergonomic approaches to manual handling and other work tasks leading to improved working posture
  • Understand principles of good back care to promote general musculoskeletal health
  • How is the Moving & Handling course assessed?
  • This Manual Handling course involved both theoretical and practical elements, each learner will be assessed on competence with the practical demonstrations by our experienced Moving & Handling trainers

Requirements

All our classroom courses are written for different levels depending on job role, i.e, from Level 1 to Level 6. It is recommended that learners should complete introductory modules, i.e, Level 1 modules before attempting Level 3-6 courses. Those who are new to health and social care sectors should complete introductory modules, particularly the Care Certificate. Some modules require additional practical assessments in your place of employment, for example, first aid, manual handling of objects, moving and handling of people and resuscitation. These modules can be used for professional reviews and revalidation for doctors and nurses.

Career path

On completion of introductory modules, those new to health and social care sectors can proceed to complete health and social care QCF and NVQ qualifications from Level 2 up to Level 6., as well as nursing and allied health professions. Qualified health and social care professionals can use these online modules for their continuing professional development and revalidation requirements.
