Description

The Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment is a level 3 qualification accredited by TQUK, an Ofqual accredited Awarding Body, ensuring the course meets a standard of quality. The course is one of the options available on the Assessor Award, the right course for you will depend on where you are carrying out assessments, for the Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment you need to be carrying out assessments in the workplace.

Course Units:

  • Unit 1 Understanding the principles and practices of assessment

This is a knowledge unit and requires you to be able to understand the principles of assessment, the different methods, how to plan assessments, involve others, make decisions, and understand quality assurance, legal and good practice requirements and how to manage information. The method of assessment of the unit is through written assignments, there are reasonable adjustments available for those who need them, for example professional discussions. Although it is mandatory, this unit alone does not qualify you to assess. Those who choose to complete this unit only will be those who need to know about assessment but who are not going to carry out any assessments.

  • Unit 2 Assess occupational competence in the work environment

This unit of the Award in Assessing Occupational Competence in the work environment is ideal for assessors doing NVQ-type qualifications where assessments are carried out at work with candidates performing their everyday duties. You have to demonstrate that you can plan an assessment of occupational competence, make decisions, provide records, and follow legal and good practice requirements. The method of assessment is by observation of you carrying out an assessment in the workplace, questioning the learner, discussions with the learner, and examining their work products as well as their learner statements.

It includes the following assessment methods (although not all of these require performance evidence):

  • observation of performance in the work environment;
  • examining products of work;
  • questioning the learner;
  • discussing with the learner;
  • use of others (witness testimony);
  • looking at learner statements;
  • recognising prior learning

Observation of practical assessments:

For unit 2 you will need to have access to at least two candidates going through assessments and have these assessments observed. Observations can be carried out by qualified personnel at your workplace, they will need to have their Assessor Award and IQA qualifications, you will need to submit evidence of their qualifications. Alternatively MKLC can do the observations either by video link or live visit depending on location, there is an additional cost for this.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
