Overview

The role of a first aider for mental health is to provide basic mental health support or to be the first response to someone in need, usually in the workplace. The first aider for mental health is not clinically qualified to assess, diagnose or treat mental ill health but they will know the basic tools to listen to individuals who require first response support for their mental health.

Description

This is a knowledge qualification that provides underpinning knowledge and understanding in relation to the principles of first aid for mental health, recognising mental ill health in self and others, supporting mental wellbeing in the workplace, understanding how to promote a wellness culture in the workplace and the importance of resilience and self-care for first aiders for mental health.

This qualification is assessed by 2 multiple-choice examinations, which are externally set and marked by the awarding body:


Unit 1: Introduction to mental health, mental ill health and wellbeing
Learners must complete 9 of 15 questions correctly within 30 minutes.

Unit 2: Introduction to first aid for mental health
Learners must complete 15 of 25 questions correctly within 50 minutes.


Learners must pass both examinations in order to be awarded the qualification.

This qualification can be taken by learners preparing to enter employment or by those who are already in employment.
