Functional Skills qualifications provide reliable evidence of a learner’s achievements against demanding content that is relevant to the workplace. The qualifications assess learners’ underpinning subject knowledge and their ability to apply this knowledge to different contexts. They provide a foundation for progression to employment and further technical education, and they help learners to develop skills for everyday life. In some contexts, Functional Skills qualifications will also play a part in the government’s accountability systems.
The Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills in English at Level 1 are based on Department for Education (DfE) approved subject content, Nationally Recognised Qualifications and are regulated by Ofqual.

Functional Skills in English at Level 1 Qualification purpose:
The Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1 and 2 are for learners to develop understanding and skills in English.

Functional Skills in English at Level 1 Qualification Aims and Outcomes
The qualification gives learners the opportunity to:
- Listen, understand and make relevant contributions to discussions with others in a range of contexts
- Apply their understanding of language to adapt delivery and content to suit audience and purpose
- Read a range of different text types confidently and fluently, applying their knowledge and understanding of texts to their own writing
- Write texts of varying complexity, with accuracy, effectiveness, and correct spelling, punctuation and grammar
- Understand the situations when, and audiences for which, planning, drafting.
Progression opportunities for Functional Skills in English at Level 1 Qualification
Learners who achieve the Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1 can progress to a similar qualification at Level 2. Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills Qualification in English at Levels 1 Qualification offer learners the opportunity to develop their English knowledge and skills as part of an Apprenticeship or in employment.

You will have the opportunity to get expert support or tutor guidance whenever you needed. You can book your tutor support at an additional cost of £200.
Official Exam/Assessment:
You will be assessed via an online remotely invigilated exam that you can take from the comfort of your own home. When you will be ready for the official exam there is an additional registration fee of £375 (Excl. VAT) for Pearson Edexcel and NCFE awarding body and an additional registration fee of £190 (Excl. VAT) for Open Awards awarding body to book the official exam.
Assessment structure
Learners will need to meet the requirements outlined below before the qualification can be awarded.
The Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1 consists of one internally-set and internally-marked Speaking, listening and communicating assessment, one externally-assessed Reading assessment and one externally assessed Writing assessment. They are available as paper-based and onscreen, on demand assessments.
Speaking, listening and communicating:
Speaking, listening and communicating is assessed through one 3-minute talk and linked question and answer session per learner in groups of three to four and one 10-minute formal discussion together in groups of three to five learners.
- Duration = Formal 10 minutes and 10 – 20 minutes in total
- Number of marks = n/a
Reading:
Reading is assessed through a test comprised of controlled response and open response questions.
- Duration = 60 minutes
- Number of marks = 30
Writing:
Writing is assessed through a test comprised of two tasks. (42% of marks assesses spelling, punctuation and grammar).
- Duration = 60 minutes
- Number of marks = 36
