Overview

This course prepares students for practice as a trainee solicitor and provides them with a solid foundation for subsequent practice as a solicitor. This course, which can be studied full-time or part-time provides graduates who have completed the academic stage of legal training or who are Members or Fellows of the Institute of Legal Executives, with the professional stage of training as solicitors. The course emphasises the skills which are required in practice and must be successfully completed prior to the commencement of a training contract.

Requirements:

Students must hold a law degree approved by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, or have passed either the Common Professional Examination/Graduate Diploma in Law or have otherwise satisfied the academic stage of training as required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority; students must also enrol as a student member of the Solicitors Regulation Authority before beginning the LPC. Students should apply for membership no later than the 1st August before the commencement of the LPC, or 1st March if any suitability of character issues require consideration. Students should however check the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s guidance for the most up to date information; students who have completed Stage 1 of the LPC at another LPC provider may apply for Stage 2 or part of Stage 2 and are usually accepted subject to places being available; in addition, students are required to obtain a copy of the training regulations from the Solicitors Regulation Authority as early as possible; students should also have a good standard of written and spoken English.

Stage 1: Core modules: professional conduct and regulation (including solicitors’ accounts); business law and practice; property law and practice; litigation and advocacy; wills and administration of estates. Stage 2: 3 optional modules: commercial law; commercial property law; employment law; family law; housing law; immigration and welfare law; insolvency law; personal injury litigation.
