Description
This course is an insight into Japanese culture through the character of the male sporting hero, the influence of ‘boy’ manga comics, and the film’s setting of the Kanagawa prefecture.
Explore alternative cinema that captures the spirit and culture of Japan, whilst expanding your knowledge of Japanese life and art. Based on a popular manga comic by Taiyoo Matsumoto, the award-winning Ping Pong (2002) is a teenage drama about the Japanese hero. High school table tennis provides the sporting arena for Kankuro Kudo’s light-hearted script about friendship, mentors, dreams, talents and flaws. Let the joy of ‘Ping Pong’ find your true hero!
Open to all level, no particular skills are necessary, only an interest in Japan and Japanese culture.

-Recognise the influence of Manga comics on Japanese society
-Widen your knowledge of Japan through discussions with like-minded people.
There will be a short presentation by the tutor before the projection and an opportunity for discussion with other class members to reflect on the film.
This event is free. However, you will need to enrol before joining as places are limited. We would welcome a small contribution towards the City Lit students' bursary on the day.
