This course will prepare you with all-important aspects of counselling to enable working with the bereaved.

  • Understand the grief reaction, the ‘chaos’ of grief and its different phases.
  • Understand the purpose of bereavement counselling.
  • Understand the stress specific and non-specific/mixed reactions of grief.
  • Understand and identify the different types of grief.
  • Explain how to support the management of grief.
  • Recognise a ‘pang’ or ‘wave’ of grief and explain what might trigger such an episode.
  • Learn how anger is a normal response to grief and how it is often misdirected.
  • Identify the primary symptoms of grief and the ‘on-going’ state, which is likely to be experienced.
  • Learn the definition of the following:
    • Stigma
    • Deprivation
  • Understand ways in which bereavement affects the male client.
  • Discover how children handle grief at different ages.
  • Establish how the counsellor deals with the burden of guilt in a child.
  • Understand the impact and scope of violent death.
  • Explore how support needs to be adapted when dealing with violent death.
  • Identify normal and pathological denial.
  • Ascertain the rights of the bereaved.

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered.
