Overview

Forensic linguistics is the study that intersects between language and law. The goal of forensic linguistics is to provide informative, truthful and relevant evidence that could be understood in the court of law language. It is a challenge to separate law from language – someone has to be able to interpret the intersection and forensic linguistics studies provides that avenue.

A forensic linguist has to be able to provide an opinion in the form of evidence and explain that evidence in relevance to a case.

Description

At the end of this course, students shall learn how to: (1) understand basic principles of forensic linguistics and expert evidence; (2) study and identify authorship and its influence on forensic linguistics; (3) acquire and use language; (4) differentiate different forms of author variation; (5) compare authorship; and (6) understand guiding principles of statement analysis.

To achieve these goals, this course shall make use of interactive materials to present the concepts of the topics to be discussed. Assessments shall be done after the entire course to check for knowledge retention and understanding.

Rowling, the famous writer of Harry Potter had written a new book “The Cuckoo’s Calling” under the name Robert Galbraith and was discovered that it was her because of striking linguistics similarities. This is a work of a forensic linguistics. Fascinating? Yes. The world of forensic linguistics is truly fascinating.

Course Format

This course is divided into several modules and is delivered online through our interactive learning management system. Students are given access to the learning portal where they can access the course 24/7. This gives them complete control over the pace of their learning while also enabling them to study from home, in their offices or from a laptop while traveling.

Course Duration:

Normative or minimum period of study to complete this is 45 hours. Take note that this is only an estimate.
