Overview

This degree provides experience of both in-depth theory and hands-on research in the emerging area of educational neuroscience. It covers: The critical appreciation of existing research and research methods; running a neuroimaging study; the biological basis of learning and development in children and its implications for the classroom; the relation between genes, brain and cognitive development; managing and reporting on an extended research project; and subject-specific IT skills. The programme is ideal for teachers, educational psychologists and policy-makers who wish to develop an in-depth understanding of contemporary education and neuroscience that can inform their continuing practice. This programme is delivered jointly with the Institute of Education. It leads to a joint award from the Institute of Education's Department of Psychology and Human Development and Birkbeck's Department of Psychological Sciences, and is taught across the 2 adjacent sites.

Requirements:

Good degree (2.1 or above) in psychology, education, social science, cognitive science, speech/communication science, neuroscience, or related disciplines. Relevant practical and professional experience may also be considered on a case-by-case basis. If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, the requirement for this programme is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 7.0, with not less than 6.5 in each of the sub-tests and at least 7.0 in writing.

Assessment Methods:

6 essays or equivalent written work of 2000-2500 words; statistics worksheets; 1 research presentation; 1 project dissertation of approximately 10,000 words.

Modules:

To achieve the award of a Master's degree, you must achieve a minimum of 210 credits, consisting of:

5 compulsory taught modules (4 at 15 credits and 1 at 30 credits)
2 optional modules (each worth 30 credits)
A dissertation (worth 60 credits).

For the MSc, the dissertation must report an empirical piece of research relating to neuroscience and education.
