Overview

This qualification is designed to for people who are currently working in the construction industry, to show employers that they have the skills required to competently and safely work as Construction Operatives in Civil Engineering. This means workers who build, or lay foundations for essential civil engineering projects. It can include concreting, draining or paving for highways, excavating or general works. There are a number of specific pathways to choose from, according to the job carried out, but all include the safe and competent use of relevant machinery, plant or powered tools.

The qualification confers competence for these jobs, as the qualification is written to national occupational standards. It can also lead to achievement of relevant Construction Card Competence Schemes, as the NVQ is one of the ways to achieve the card. This is not a licence to practice, however because the card scheme is recognised by many employers, it can help learners to access work on construction sites and move employment.

Learners then chose practical units in one or more of the following pathways, according to their current job role:

- Modular Pavement Construction

- General Building Operations

- Drainage Construction

- Structural Concreting

- Non-Structural Concreting

- General Construction

How is this qualification assessed?

Who is this course for?

This qualification is for all learners aged 16 and above who are capable of reaching the required standards and have opportunity to demonstrate practical skills in a realistic construction working environment. Learners do not need any prior qualifications, knowledge or experience before starting the qualification. They are likely, however to be working in Construction Operations or be able to take on such responsibilities as progression or secondment from their current construction role.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
