Overview

We know from research that the best way to develop your people is by on-the-job coaching.

Many managers are under pressure and when their staff come to them with difficulties or problems, and resort to the quickest response which is to take on the task themselves. Whilst this is expedient and ensures risk management and quality control, it means that the manager remains overworked and the staff member remains hesitant to tackle the difficulties if they crop up again.

This course will equip you with the basic skills and techniques to be able to turn ordinary conversations into coaching interactions, and build the confidence and capability of your team members to work more independently.

Description

What you'll learn

On this practical and highly interactive one-day programme you will learn simple techniques to turn a brief interaction into an empowering learning situation for your team member or employee.

  • How to take advantage of five-minute corridor coaching opportunities- how changing a few words can turn a conversation into a coaching interaction
  • The three communication skills that will get you coaching
  • Using ‘GROW' to structure the coaching conversation
  • How you come across as a coach and how to improve your own coaching style
  • To know when coaching will be effective and when another type of response is needed
  • Create a plan for who you will prioritise for your coaching efforts when you get back to work

Who is it for?

This course will suit managers at all levels who:

  • tend to take on too many tasks themselves and then don't have time for the more strategic aspects of their role
  • Manage an inexperienced team
  • find it easier to ‘do it themselves'
  • are building the capability of their team to take on some aspects of their own responsibilities in the future
  • try a coaching approach but end up telling the person what to do

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
